This past Sunday marked the 13th annual Jay Buck Jam held at Old Fourth Ward Skatepark. The Jam was started by Stormy, Jeremiah and the rest of the Atlanta skate family after the loss of Jay Buck back in 2000. The jam was originally put on to honor the memory of Jay, as well as the camaraderie and brotherhood that skateboarding brings. It’s awesome to still see it going on 13 years later with the guys that started it, the local legends, the young bucks all getting together to remember Jay Buck, and to show what skateboarding is all about. Check the video above for some highlights and be sure to come out next year if you couldn’t make it out this time.
What did you do for your 15th birthday? I don’t really remember mine. I probably spent the day looking for someone to give me a ride somewhere (which is how I spent most days when I was 15 years old). I wish I could tell you it was as fun as the Ambush 15th Anniversary day, but I would be making that up.
The day started with 15% off everything in the store. It was the first time we ever did that. People were stoked and got their new gear on the cheap.
We set up some s#!t to skate and the Ambush team celebrated with some shredding.
We gave out some schwag and then headed to the after party.
From here it gets a little fuzzy, kinda like my 15th birthday. I may not recall much, but I know it was pretty fun.
Ambush Boarding Co. is about to celebrate its 15th Anniversary. In observation of the last decade and a half, let’s take a look back and see just how long 15 years really is:
When Ambush opened in June of 1997, Bill Clinton was president, Ally McBeal and Dawson’s Creek were considered great television, Michael Jordan just won his fifth of six NBA championships, and Titanic won Best Picture.
In 1997, only 18% of households had the internet. As of 2010, over 80% are online (the other 20% live in caves). Similarly, only 18% of the U.S. population had cell phones in 1997. That figure is now upwards of 97%. S#!t, nearly 60% of cell phones now have the internet. In 1997, text messaging didn’t exist, Google was still a research project, and a gallon of gas cost $1.20 on average.
On 4/20 the Supra team pleasured the Dirty South their arrival in Atlanta. I hear they were throwing hammers down the Big 5 before they headed up here for a meet and greet. A huge crowd showed up and started to shred the ramps as they waited for the team to arrive. Tyler Lee and I got the grill going and kept hot dogs on deck.
When the vans arrived it was Neen Williams, Boo Johnson, Keelan Dadd, Spencer Hamilton, Kevin Romar, Pat Rumney, and Nick Tucker. It didn’t take long for the kids to start a line and the team began writing their name over and over and over again.
After everyone got their collectable ebay items to sell when they are over the hill, the team just chilled with crowd for a few hours. Some dudes killed the ramps, some shredded the mic. If you didn’t make it you are probably going to regret it for the rest of your life, but good thing Max got it all on film for you.
To kick off the release of the huge new Spring ’12 Vans apparel and shoe line, Vans sent the tour bus down to chill with us all day. Vitamin Water was there for the fun too which was much needed since it was molten hot all day.
We’ve chilled with Rob Dyrdek, we’ve hosted Baker, Fallen, Mystery, Real and many more, but on Saturday we got to hang with Ray Barbee, one of the most influential skateboarders of all time. OF ALL TIME! And the man couldn’t have been any cooler.
When I arrived, the parking lot and store were all ready out of control. With 20% off Vans products all day what would you expect? I whipped out the old Stevie Williams Ramp Logic box and the ledge slashing began immediately. Vans kicked off the contests with a best trick on the box, then gave out some free shoes to the kid with the most busted pair on his feet. A whole van full of product was given away throughout the day and the kids were hyped.
A couple of my friends are leaving their respective Thanksgiving celebrations early to camp out at Best Buy for some ultra cheap TV. They are spending their turkey day not with family…but in a parking lot. Why? To save money.
We are a little more sane here at Ambush. We are having a nice little Black Friday Sale where you can save a bunch of money. But…we won’t make you stand in line for hours and get trampled by the big box barbarians. This sale is for everyone and it lasts all day.

$20 off any complete skateboard
Buy one get one 50% off on all clothing (of equal or lesser value)
